BRO! Be Kind.
Our Mission at Beyond the Bar is to motivate, educate, unite, and inspire people in the industry to invest in themselves so that they can better the lives of everyone they come in contact with. With a job that allows you to interact with fifty to one hundred plus people a day, your attitude, how you carry yourself, and the impact that you leave are everything. You never know what someone is going through and who you may help restore a little bit of hope in humanity by being kind.
That’s why when it comes to our clients and our mission, we are so big on being aware of the thoughts and emotions that trigger us, being present so that we aren’t getting wrapped up on autopilot, and being a leader so that we control the attitude and energy we are putting off for everyone around us.
WHAT ARE WE SAYING?
Before we get into the importance of being kind in the industry, we first need to look inward.
Are you being kind to yourself?
Self-compassion is directly linked with the concept of cultivating a growth mindset. If you treat yourself with compassion and understanding, it becomes more natural to forgive yourself and be kinder. When we do this for ourselves, it reflects more genuinely in our interactions with others.
3 REASONS WHY ITS SO IMPORTANT TO BE KIND IN THE INDUSTRY
1. You Play a Major Part in People’s Most Important Days
Think about it—- birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc. Where do people go? They go to restaurants to celebrate. You get to be a part of their joy. When were busy or just straight up not leading with kindness, these events can annoy us (cue the eye roll when you hear “can someone sing happy birthday with me?”) but its important to remember HOW IMPORTANT these moments are for our guests just like they are also important and filled with joy in our own lives. Live in the moment with them.
2. Its True, You Never Know What Someone is Going Through
While we play a major role in the most important days, we also are the ones there on the unimportant or down right bad days. We’re not doctors or life savers over here. We’re serving food and bussing tables. But what if our genuine kindness and care while doing so could make someones day turn around? Sometimes its the most simple act of kindness that can make a terrible day better. It could help break up the monotony of the week when they remember how genuine their experience was.
3. It Fills Your Own Cup at the Same Time
Its more about the entire experience. It becomes a domino effect, we take the time to be kind to ourselves, we then can share that kindness with our guests. Once we share the kindness with our guests, they match the energy we give. This leaves us feeling full.
Kindness is free to give to yourself and others. It costs nothing to be genuinely nice to people. Let’s take the time to show ourselves compassion and understanding so we can freely give it to others in their best moments, their worst moments, and everything in between.
