MORE THAN A CHECK MARK

We’re in full swing of fall and finally have time to really focus on ourselves. Summer’s over and our workplaces and starting to slow down. WE CAN BREATHE.

During this time, we find ourselves starting to replay our to-do lists in our mind. You know, the things we put off all summer long. The lists are falling to the floor of responsibilities that were abandoned for the last four months. It can be overwhelming when we sit down and write out all the things that we now have time to accomplish.

  1. MAKE YOUR WEEKLY LIST OBTAINABLE

Rome wasn’t built in a day. Make your weekly list obtainable. If you know you work 6 shifts, creating a list of 56 things to accomplish will leave you defeated. Match your list with time you have available. The point of the list is to lead us to success and leave us feeling accomplished, not even more overwhelmed.

2. BREAK IT DOWN IN CATEGORIES

Instead of creating a list of everything, break the list down.

Your categories can include:

financial tasks- going to the bank finally, creating an off season budget, setting a goal plan for a trip or a big purchase.

Mental tasks- taking time to read each day, talking to someone about what’s going on in your life, spending time alone, mindfulness exercises.

Physical tasks- starting a new workout program, taking 3 opportunities in the week to go to yoga, walking everyday, hydrating appropriately.

Household tasks- going through summer clothes and donating, organizing the kitchen, deep cleaning, a household project you’ve been putting off.

3. FOCUS ON MORE THAN JUST THE CHECK MARK

Sure, it feels good to check things off but we were not born to just complete tasks and then die. Make it fun, maybe it’s a reward system- “If I complete a, b, and c, I will go hang out with Jim Bob for awhile.” Maybe, take time to focus on the positive that comes along with completing those tasks. If its something that you’ve been avoiding for months, the weight off your shoulders may be enough for you to find some peace. Pay attention to how finishing tasks makes you feel and what freedom it brings instead of just the check mark you get to place next to it.

Make that list, break it down, realize its more than just a check mark but a positive change in your life AND SEIZE THE WEEK!
